My grandfather used to take me for walks in the mountains and he didn't say very much. I learned from him to listen to silence. And for me, listening is the most important thing: to listen to each other, to listen to what people say, to listen to music.[1]
The most important thing is to listen to each other. Many people learn how to talk, but they don't learn how to listen. Listening to one another is an important thing in life. And music tells us how to do that.[2]
Culture overcomes social inequities. Culture frees us from poverty.[2]
In life every man has to take a position. When people say, ‘Oh, he is a musician, why should he talk about politics?’ this is stupid. I did a concert against fascism in Italy at La Scala. It was at the time of the election, and the fascists were very strong. In Italy, the opposition to fascism is communism, but it is not like it is in America. I myself, however, belong to no party. I voted for the Communists simply because they were the opposition to the fascists. But I disagree with both Italian and Russian communism on many things. My line is very clear. I am for freedom. Everything that is not for freedom I protest.[4]
Simon, my illness was terrible, but the results have not been all bad: I feel that somehow I hear from the inside of my body, as if the loss of my stomach gave me internal ears. I cannot express how wonderful that feels. And I still feel that music saved my life in that time![5]

– Riccardo Muti
His work is an immense testimony to the importance of European and Italian culture around the world. I admire him for the strong courage he showed in the face of a long and terrible illness, and for the seriousness and profundity that characterized his life as a musician and as a Maestro.[6]
Dal nám svou upřímnou lásku a hlubokou moudrost. – Gustavo Dudamel
Claudio Abbado will always be part of the exalted group of geniuses in the history of the arts. His endless generosity and love touched me at a very early age and will be always one of the most valuable treasures in my life. It was not only me personally but more importantly our Sistema Nacional de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Venezuela that he embraced as his family. He gave to us his sincere love and his profound wisdom.[6]
– Daniel Barenboim
He was a pioneer who worked with young musicians, challenged and supported them, throughout his entire career. With this, he set an example for the world.[7]
– Simon Rattle
Ten years ago we all wondered whether he would survive the illness which has now claimed him, but instead, he, and we as musicians and public, could enjoy an extraordinary Indian summer, in which all the facets of his art came together in an unforgettable way.[7]
  • I v 80 letech studoval stejně jako v 18. – Massimo Biscardi, Abbadův přítel z Mozartova orchestru v Boloni
At 80 years old he was studying like he was 18.[7]
