George Whitefield

George Whitefield (27. prosince 1714 – 30. září 1770) byl metodistický kazatel a evangelista, přítel Johna Wesleyho. Hrál významnou roli v Prvním velkém probuzení v Americe.

Výroky

O sobě

  • Mnoho jich dovede kázat evangelium lépe než já, ale nikdo nemůže kázat lepší evangelium.
There are many who can may preach the gospel better than I can, but none can preach a better gospel.[1]
  • Bože, dej mi hlubokou pokoru, dobře vedenou horlivost, hořící lásku a sprostné oko, a pak ať lidé a ďáblové dělají to nejhorší, co mohou!
God, give me a deep humility, a well-guided zeal, a burning love and a single eye, and then let men or devils do their worst![2]
  • Bůh chraň, abych měl s kýmkoliv cestovat čtvrt hodiny bez toho, abych s nimi mluvil o Kristu.
God forbid that I should travel with anybody a quarter of an hour without speaking of Christ to them.[3]
Lord Jesus, I am weary in Thy work, but not of it. If I have not yet finished my course, let me go and speak for Thee once more in the field, seal Thy truth, and come home to die.[4]
Let the name of Whitefield perish, but Christ be glorified.[5]

O hříchu a pekle

There is not a thing on the face of the earth that I abhor so much as idleness or idle people.[6]
  • Jestli jedna zlá myšlenka, jedno zlé slovo, jeden zlý skutek zasluhují věčné zatracení, kolik pekel, mí přátelé, zasluhuje každý z nás, jejichžto životy byly jednou neustálou vzpourou vůči Bohu!
If one evil thought, if one evil word, if one evil action, deserves eternal damnation, how many hells, my friends, do every one of us deserve, whose whole lives have been one continued rebellion against God![7]
I fear many ministers as well as people want to recommend themselves to God by their sincerity; they think, 'If we do all we can, if we are but sincere, Jesus Christ will have mercy on us.' But pray what is there in our sincerity to recommend us to God? There is no natural man sincere till God makes us new creatures in Christ; and, therefore, if you depend on your sincerity for your salvation, your sincerity will damn you.[8]
  • Ponechán sám sobě je člověk napůl zvíře a napůl ďábel.
Left to himself, man is half beast and half devil.[9]

O Bibli

If we once get above our Bibles and cease making the written Word of God our sole rule both as to faith and practice, we shall soon lie open to all manner of delusion and be in great danger of making shipwreck of faith and a good conscience.[10]
I got more true knowledge from reading the Book of God in one month, than I could ever have acquired from all the writings of men.[11]
The word Bible, or book, which I have in my hand, is well applied to the holy scriptures, because it is the book of God, written by him that is, by his order and by those who were inspired by him for that end; and yet, of all writings in the world, these are most neglected! God has condescended to become an author, and yet people will not read his writings. There are very few that ever gave this Book of God, the grand charter of salvation, one fair reading through.[12]

O kázání a kazatelích

The reason why congregations have been so dead is because they have dead men preaching to them. How can dead men beget living children?[13]
It is a poor sermon that gives no offense; that neither makes the hearer displeased with himself nor with the preacher.[14]
As God can send a nation or people no greater blessing than to give them faithful, sincere and upright ministers, so the greatest curse that God can possibly send upon a people in this world is to give them over to blind, unregenerate, carnal, lukewarm and unskilled guides.[15]

Jesus was God and man in one person, that God and man might be happy together again.[16]
As Christ was born of the Virgin's womb, so must He be spiritually formed in our hearts. As He died for sin, so must we die to sin. And as He rose again from the dead, so must we also rise to a divine life.[17]
  • Neboj se svého slabého těla, neboť jsme nesmrtelní, dokud naše práce neskončí.
Fear not your weak body, we are immortal till our work is done.[18]
  • Skutky? Skutky?
Works? Works? A man get to heaven by works? I would as soon think of climbing to the moon on a rope of sand![19]

Ve výrocích

  • Kde je takové přímé kázání jako Whitefieldovo? Četli jste někdy nějaké z jeho kázání? Nebude jej považovat za výmluvného; nemůžete si to o něm myslet. Jeho výrazy byly kostrbaté, často velmi nevybrané a nesouvislé. (…) (Charles Spurgeon)
Where is the right down preaching, such as Whitefield's? Have you ever read one of his sermons? You will not think him eloquent; you can not think him so. His expressions were rough, frequently very coarse and unconnected. (…) But where lay his eloquence? Not in the words you read, but in the tone in which he delivered them, and in the earnestness with which he felt them, and in the tears which ran down his cheeks, and in the pouring out of his soul. The reason why he was eloquent was just what the word means. He was eloquent, because he spoke right out from his heart — from the innermost depths of the man. You could see when he spoke that he meant what he said. He did not speak as a trade, or as a mere machine, but he preached what he felt to be the truth, and what he could not help preaching. When you heard him preach, you could not help feeling that he was a man who would die if he could not preach.[20]
On žil. (Charles Spurgeon)
Often as I have read his life I am conscious of distinct quickening whenever I turn to it. He lived. Other men seemed to be only half-alive; but Whitefield was all life, fire, wing , force. My own model, if I may have such a thing in due subordination to my Lord, is George Whitefield; but with unequal footsteps must I follow in his glorious track.[21]
(John Charles Ryle)
I come to the conclusion that no man has ever done more good in his day and generation than [George Whitefield]. He was a true hero, and that in its highest and best sense. He did a work that will stand the fire, and glorify God, when many other works are forgotten. And for that work I believe that England owes a debt to his character which England has never yet paid.[22]
  • Největší kazatel, jakého Anglie kdy zrodila. (Martyn Lloyd-Jones)
The greatest preacher that England has ever produced.[23][24]
(John Wesley)
No. (…) Do not misunderstand me, madam; George Whitefield was so bright a star in the firmament of God's glory, and will stand so near the throne, that one like me, who am less than the least, will never catch a glimpse of him.[25]
