Charles Haddon Spurgeon (19.

O Bohu[editovat]

Naše motto je, „S Bohem kamkoliv, bez Boha nikam.“
Our motto is, „With God, anywhere: without God, nowhere.“[3]
Men will allow God to be everywhere but on His throne. They will allow Him to be in His workshop to fashion worlds and make stars. They will allow Him to be in His almonry to dispense His alms and bestow his bounties. They will allow Him to sustain the earth and bear up the pillars thereof, or light the lamps of heaven, or rule the waves of the ever-moving ocean; but when God ascends His throne, His creatures then gnash their teeth. And we proclaim an enthroned God, and His right to do as He wills with His own, to dispose of His creatures as He thinks well, without consulting them in the matter; then it is that we are hissed and execrated, and then it is that men turn a deaf ear to us, for God on His throne is not the God they love. But it is God upon the throne that we love to preach. It is God upon His throne whom we trust.[4]
Nothing teaches us so much about the preciousness of the Creator as when we learn the emptiness of all besides.[5]
  • Bůh pomáhá těm, kdo si nemohou pomoci sami.
God helps those who cannot help themselves.[6]
To rejoice in temporal comforts is dangerous, to rejoice in self is foolish, to rejoice in sin is fatal, but to rejoice in God is heavenly.[7]
False gods patiently endure the existence of other false gods. Dagon can stand with Bel, and Bel with Ashtaroth; how should stone, and wood, and silver, be moved to indignation; but because God is the only living and true God, Dagon must fall before His ark; Bel must be broken, and Ashtaroth must be consumed with fire. [8]

O Kristu[editovat]

Mám velikou potřebu Krista; mám velikého Krista pro svou potřebu.
I have a great need for Christ: I have a great Christ for my need.[9]
  • Nekonečný, a přece dítě. Věčný, a přesto zrozený z ženy. Král andělů, a přesto domnělý syn Josefův. Dědic všech věcí, a přesto tesařův pohrdaný syn.
Infinite, and an infant. Eternal, and yet born of a woman. Almighty, and yet hanging on a woman’s breast. Supporting a universe, and yet needing to be carried in a mother’s arms. King of angels, and yet the reputed son of Joseph. Heir of all things, and yet the carpenter’s despised son.[10]
  • Není-li ti Kristus vším, není ti ničím. On nikdy nevejde ve společenství jako částečný Spasitel lidí. Má-li být něčím, musí být vším, a nebude-li vším, není ti ničím.
If Christ is not all to you He is nothing to you. He will never go into partnership as a part Saviour of men. If He be something He must be everything, and if He be not everything He is nothing to you.[11]
  • Pamatuj, že Pán Ježíš přišel odejmout hřích třemi způsoby; přišel vzít trest za hřích, moc hříchu a nakonec, přítomnost hříchu.
Remember that the Lord Jesus came to take away sin in three ways; He came to remove the penalty of sin, the power of sin, and, at last, the presence of sin.[12]
Nothing puts life into men like a dying Savior.[13]
  • Největší radostí křesťana je dělat radost Kristu.
The greatest joy of a Christian is to give joy to Christ.[14]
  • Příliš mnoho lidí smýšlí nízce o hříchu, a proto smýšlí nízce o Spasiteli.
Too many think lightly of sin, and therefore think lightly of the Savior.[15]
  • Ach, pane Ježíši! Neznal jsem Tvou lásku, dokud jsem nepochopil význam Tvé smrti.
Ah, Lord Jesus! I never knew Your love till I understood the meaning of Your death.[16]

You might as well expect to raise the dead by whispering in their ears, as hope to save souls by preaching to them, if it were not for the agency of the Spirit.[17]
  • Hříšník nemůže bez pomoci Ducha svatého činit pokání a věřit o nic víc, než může stvořit svět.
A sinner can no more repent and believe without the Holy Spirit's aid than he can create a world.[18]
It seems odd, that certain men who talk so much of what the Holy Spirit reveals to themselves, should think so little of what he has revealed to others.[19]
  • Duch Boží nevydává svědectví kázáním bez Krista. Vynech Ježíše ze svých kázání, a Duch svatý na tebe nikdy nesestoupí.
The Spirit of God bears no witness to Christless sermons. Leave Jesus out of your preaching, and the Holy Spirit will never come upon you.[20]

O Bibli[editovat]

Bible, celá Bible a nic než Bible je náboženstvím Kristovy církve.
The Bible, the whole Bible, and nothing but the Bible is the religion of Christ's church.[21]
  • Bránit Bibli? To bych stejně tak mohl bránit lva! Vypusťte ji – ona se ubrání sama.
Defend the Bible? I would as soon defend a lion! Let it out – it can defend itself.[22]
I have little confidence in those persons who speak of, as though he appeared otherwise than by and through the gospel. His Word is so full, so perfect, that for God to make any fresh revelation to you or me is quite needless. To do so would be to put a dishonour upon the perfection of that Word.[23]
  • Ten, kdo čte Bibli, aby jí vytýkal chyby, brzy jistí, že Bible vytýká chyby jemu.
He that reads his Bible to find fault with it will soon discover that the Bible finds fault with him.[24]
If you hear a man rail at the Bible, you can usually conclude that he never reads it.[25]
There is dust enough on some of your Bibles to write “damnation” with your fingers.[26]
  • Čím více čtete Bibli a rozjímáte nad ní, tím více nad ní budete žasnout.
The more you read the Bible and the more you meditate on it, the more you will be astonished with it.[27]
Many a text [of the Scripture] is written in a secret ink which must be held to the fire of adversity to make it visible.[28]
The fact is, we sometimes read Scripture, thinking of what it ought to say, rather than what it does.[29]
  • Chceme-li probuzení, musíme probudit naši vážnost vůči Slovu Božímu.
If we want revivals, we must revive our reverence for the Word of God.[30]

You must either give up your sins or give up all hope of heaven. [31]
When Satan cannot get a great sin in he will let a little one in, like the thief who goes and finds shutters all coated with iron and bolted inside. At last he sees a little window in a chamber. He cannot get in, so he puts a little boy in, that he may go round and open the back door. So the devil has always his little sins to carry about with him to go and open back doors for him, and we let one in and say: „O, it is only a little one.“ Yes, but how that little one becomes the ruin of the entire man![32]
If there be a man before me who says that the wrath of God is too heavy a punishment for his little sin, I ask him, if the sin be little, why does he not give it up?[33]
As the salt flavors every drop in the Atlantic, so does sin affect every atom of our nature. It is so sadly there, so abundantly there, that if you cannot detect it, you are deceived.[34]
Our best performances are so stained with sin, that it is hard to know whether they are good works or bad works.[35]
There must be a divorce between you and sin, or there can be no marriage between you and Christ.[36]
  • Vždy budeš moci vědět, jsi-li vysvobozen z viny hříchu, skrze odpověď na otázku: Jsem vysvobozen z lásky k hříchu?
You will always know whether you are delivered from the guilt of sin by answering this question: Am I delivered from the love of sin?[37]
We must show sympathy with sinners, but not with their sins.[38]
  • Nechceš-li smrt hříchu, budeš mít hřích k smrti. Není jiná možnost. Nezemřeš-li hříchu, zemřeš pro hřích. Nezničíš-li hřích, hřích zničí tebe.
If you will not have death unto sin, you shall have sin unto death. There is no alternative. If you do not die to sin, you shall die for sin. If you do not slay sin, sin will slay you.[39]

The demon of pride was born with us; and it will not die one hour before us.[40]
  • Kniha Přísloví uštědřuje tvrdé rány lenochům, a křesťanský kazatel dobře činí, odsuzuje-li často ten veliký hřích zahálky, který je matkou veliké rodiny hříchů.
The Book of Proverbs deals very hard blows against sluggards, and Christian ministers do well frequently to denounce the great sin of idleness, which is the mother of a huge family of sins.[41]
  • Zahálka je klíč k žebrotě.
Idleness is the key of beggary.[42]
  • Zahálčiví lidé pokouší ďábla, aby je pokoušel.
Idle people tempt the devil to tempt them.[43]
Pleasure, so called, is the murderer of serious thought. This is the age of excessive amusement. Everybody craves for it, like a babe for its rattle![44]
Unbelief is the mother of vice; it is the parent of sin; and, therefore, I say it is a pestilent evil - a master sin.[45]
  • Vystříhejte se samospravedlnosti. Černý ďábel prostopášnosti hubí své stovky, ale bílý ďábel samospravedlnosti hubí své tisíce.
Beware of self-righteousness. The black devil of licentiousness destroys his hundreds, but the white devil of self-righteousness destroys his thousands.[46]
  • Lenivost je půdou, kde rostou všechny hříchy.[zdroj?]
  • Lenivost je klíčem k žebráctví, je kořenem všech neřestí[zdroj?]

O ateismu[editovat]

There are no infidels anywhere but on earth: there are none in heaven, and there are none in hell. Atheism is a strange thing. Even the devils never fell into that vice, for “the devils also believe and tremble” (James 2:19).[47]
Opposition to divine sovereignty is essentially atheism.[48]
You will find those who rail at the very being of a God, though in their consciences they know there is a God, yet with their lips will blasphemously deny his existence. These men say there is no God, because they wish there were none.[49]
I have noticed that whenever a person gives up his belief in the Word of God because it requires that he should believe a good deal, his unbelief requires him to believe a great deal more. If there be any difficulties in the faith of Christ, they are not one-tenth as great as the absurdities in any system of unbelief which seeks to take its place.[50]

Morality may keep you out of jail, but it takes the blood of Jesus Christ to keep you out of hell.[51]
  • Můžeš-li hřešit a neplakat nad tím, jsi dědicem pekla.
If you can sin and not weep over it, you are an heir of Hell. If you can go into sin, and afterwards feel satisfied to have done so, you are on the road to destruction.[52]
Sin and Hell are married unless repentance proclaims the divorce.[53]
[Satan] can make [men] dance upon the brink of hell as though they were on the verge of heaven.[54]

O pokání[editovat]

  • Pokání a víra jsou neznovuzrozeným odporné; raději by opakovali tisíc formálních modliteb, než vyronili jednu jedinou slzu pravého pokání.
Repentance and faith are distasteful to the unregenerate; they would sooner repeat a thousand formal prayers than shed a solitary tear of true repentance.[55]
Repentance must dig the foundations, but holiness shall erect the structure, and bring forth the top-stone. Repentance is the clearing away of the rubbish of the past temple of sin; holiness builds the new temple which the Lord our God shall inherit. Repentance and desires after holiness never can be separated.[56]
Remember the man who truly repents is never satisfied with his own repentance.[57]
  • Pokání roste jako roste víra. Nemyl se o tom; pokání není věcí dnů či týdnů. (…) Ne, je to celoživotní ctnost, jako víra sama.
Repentance grows as faith grows. Do not make any mistake about it; repentance is not a thing of days and weeks. (...) No; it is the grace of a lifetime, like faith itself.[58]
True belief and true repentance are twins: it would be idle to attempt to say which is born first. All the spokes of a wheel move at once when the wheel moves, and so all the graces commence action when regeneration is wrought by the Holy Ghost.[59]

O evangelizaci[editovat]

If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.[60]
  • Každý křesťan je buď misionář nebo podvodník.
Every Christian is either a missionary or an impostor.[61]
  • Věřím, že hanobíme Krista, když si myslíme, že máme lákat lidi něčím jiným než kázáním Krista ukřižovaného.
I do believe we slander Christ when we think we are to draw the people by something else but the preaching of Christ crucified.[62]
Let this be to you the mark of true gospel preaching - where Christ is everything, and the creature is nothing; where it is salvation all of grace, through the work of the Holy Spirit applying to the soul the precious blood of Jesus.[63]
If God does not save men by truth, he certainly will not save them by lies. And if the old gospel is not competent to work a revival, then we will do without the revival.[64]

O kázání a kazatelích[editovat]

The sermon which does not lead to Christ, or of which Jesus Christ is not the top and the bottom, is a sort of sermon that will make the devils in hell laugh, but make the angels of God weep.[65]
  • Samá originalita a žádné plagiátoství vede k mdlému kázání.
All originality and no plagiarism makes for dull preaching.[66]
  • Bůh mně dal tuto velikou knihu, abych z ní kázal, a vložil-li do ní něco, co shledáváte nevhodným, jděte a stěžujte si Jemu, ne mně. Já jsem jenom Jeho služebník, a je-li Jeho poselství, jež mám hlásat, nepříjemné, nemohu s tím nic dělat.
God gave me this great book to preach from, and if He has put anything in it you think is not fit, go and complain to Him, not to me. I am simply His servant, and if His errand that I am to tell is objectionable, I cannot help it.[67]
  • Žádná hudba není kazateli evangelia sladší, než šelest stran Biblí ve shromáždění.
No music is more sweet to a gospel preacher than the rustle of Bible pages in the congregation.[68]
  • S kázáním si nemůžeme zahrávat. Kážeme pro věčnost.
We cannot play at preaching. We preach for eternity.[69]
The preaching of Christ is the whip that flogs the devil. The preaching of Christ is the thunderbolt, the sound of which makes all hell shake. Let us never be silent then.[70]
Surely if men's hearts were right, short sermons would be enough.[71]
  • Kázání často člověku prospívá nejvíc, když ho nejvíc rozzlobí. Takoví lidé, kteří odcházejí uličkou a říkají, „toho člověka už nebudu nikdy poslouchat,“ mají velmi často ve své hrudi jitřící šíp.
A sermon often does a man most good when it makes him most angry. Those people who walk down the aisles and say, "I will never hear that man again," very often have an arrow rankling in their breast.[72]
Far better for a man that he had never been born than that he should degrade a pulpit into a show box to exhibit himself in.[73]
When I cease to preach salvation by faith in Jesus, put me into a lunatic asylum, for you may be sure that my mind is gone.[74]

O kalvinismu a arminianismu[editovat]

Among all those who have been born of women, there has not risen a greater than John Calvin; no age, before him ever produced his equal, and no age afterwards has seen his rival.[75]
  • Není to tedy žádná novinka, kterou kážu, žádné nové učení.
It is no novelty, then, that I am preaching; no new doctrine. I love to proclaim these strong old doctrines, that are called by nickname Calvinism, but which are surely and verily the revealed truth of God as it is in Christ Jesus.[76]
(…) Je to přezdívka, nazývat to kalvinismus; kalvinismus je evangelium, a nic jiného.
I have my own private opinion that there is no such thing as preaching Christ and Him crucified, unless we preach what now-a-days is called Calvinism. (…) It is a nickname to call it Calvinism; Calvinism is the gospel, and nothing else.[77]
You have heard a great many Arminian sermons, I dare say; but you never heard an Arminian prayer - for the saints in prayer appear as one in word, and deed and mind. An Arminian on his knees would pray desperately like a Calvinist. He cannot pray about free-will: there is no room for it.[78]
Whitfield said, „We are all born Arminians.“ It is grace that turns us into Calvinists.[79]
The doctrine which is called „Calvinism“ did not spring from Calvin. We believe that it sprang from the great Founder of all truth.[80]
I am not a Calvinist by choice, but because I cannot help it. The truths I preach are in me, part and parcel of myself: I do not carry my creed, but my creed carries me.[81]
  • Kalvinismus je evangelium a nic jiného. Nevěřím, že můžeme kázat evangelium, pokud nekážeme ospravedlnění vírou bez skutků, pokud nekážeme Boží svrchovanost v udílení Boží milosti, ani nekážeme evangelium, pokud nevyvyšujeme vyvolující, nezměnitelnou a účinnou Boží lásku. (kázání č. 7)

O svobodné vůli[editovat]

  • Svobodná vůle přivedla mnoho duší do pekla, ale žádnou duši do nebe.
Free will carried many a soul to hell, but never a soul to heaven.[82]
Free-will doctrine-what does it do? It magnifies man into God. It declares God's purposes a nullity, since they cannot be carried out unless men are willing. It makes God's will a waiting servant to the will of man, and the whole covenant of grace dependent on human action. Denying election on the ground of injustice, it holds God to be a debtor to sinners. [8]
Free will I have often heard of, but I have never seen it. I have always met with will, and plenty of it, but it has either been led captive by sin or held in the blessed bonds of grace.[83]

O teologii[editovat]

My entire theology can be condensed into four words, „Jesus died for me.“[84]
If you meet with a system of theology which magnifies man, flee from it as far as you can.[85]
  • Lidé se nikdy nestanou velikými v teologii, dokud se nestanou velikýmí v utrpení.
Men will never become great in divinity until they become great in suffering.[86]
This is the doctrine that we preach; if a man be saved, all the honor is to be given to Christ; but if a man be lost, all the blame is to be laid upon himself. You will find all true theology summed up in these two short sentences, salvation is all of the grace of God, damnation is all of the will of man. [31]
Rest assured that there is nothing new in theology except that which is false.[87]

Of all the dreams that ever deluded men, and probably of all blasphemies that ever were uttered, there has never been one which is more absurd, and which is more fruitful in all manner of mischief, than the idea that the Bishop of Rome can be the head of the church of Jesus Christ.[88]
  • Kristus nevykoupil svou církev svou vlastní krví, aby mohl přijít papež a ukrást si všechnu slávu.
Christ did not redeem his church with his blood that the pope might come in and steal away the glory.[89]
It is the duty of every Christian to pray against Antichrist, and as to what Antichrist is no sane man ought to raise a question. If it be not the popery in the Church of Rome and in the Church of England, there is nothing in the world that can be called by that name. If there were to be issued a hue and cry for Antichrist, we should certainly take up those two churches on suspicion, and they certainly would not be let loose again, for they so exactly answer the description.[90]
I repeat what I have often said: I would sooner a man pointed at me in the street and called me a devil, than called me a priest; for bad as the devil has has been, he has hardly been able to match the crimes, cruelties and villainies that has been transacted under the cover of a special priesthood.[91]
Little as I respect the devil I prefer him to a priest who pretends to forgive sins; for even the devil has too much honesty about him to pretend to give absolution in God's name.[92]

O víře[editovat]

  • Malá víra přivede tvou duši do nebe; veliká víra přivede nebe do tvé duše.
A little faith will bring your soul to heaven; a great faith will bring heaven to your soul.[93]
Není věcí nepraktickou, snivou, neboť víra důvěřuje, a přivazuje svůj osud k pravdě zjevení.
Faith is not a blind thing; for faith begins with knowledge. It is not a speculative thing; for faith believes facts of which it is sure. It is not an unpractical, dreamy thing; for faith trusts, and stakes its destiny upon the truth of revelation.[94]
  • Dbejte o zrnko víry více, než o mnoho vzrušení.
Care more for a grain of faith than a ton of excitement.[95]
A faith which works not for purification will work for putrefaction. Unless our faith makes us pine after holiness, it is no better than the faith of devils, and perhaps it is not even so good as that.[96]
  • Víra a poslušnost jsou spojeny v jednom ranečku. Ten, kdo poslouchá Boha, Bohu věří; a ten kdo věří Bohu, Boha poslouchá. Ten, kdo je bez víry, je bez skutků; a ten, kdo je bez skutků, je bez víry.
Faith and works are bound up in the same bundle. He that obeys God trusts God; and he that trusts God obeys God. He that is without faith is without works; and he that is without works is without faith.[97]
If you cannot trust God for temporals, how dare you trust Him for spirituals?[98]
  • Malá víra obdrží veliká milosrdenství, ale veliká víra ještě větší.
Little faith gets very great mercies, but great faith still greater.[99]
  • Nevíra zničí i ty nejlepší z nás; víra zachrání i ty nejhorší z nás.
Unbelief will destroy the best of us; faith will save the worst of us.[100]

I would rather teach one man to pray than ten men to preach.[101]
  • Žij a zemři bez modlitby, a budeš se modlit dostatečně dlouho, až se dostaneš do pekla.
Live and die without prayer, and you will pray long enough when you get to hell.[102]
  • Je dobrým pravidlem nepohledět ráno do tváře žádnému člověku, dokud nepohlédneme do tváře Boží.
It is a good rule never to look into the face of a man in the Morning till you have looked into the face of God.[103]
  • Cokoliv, co nás povede k modlitbě, je požehnáním.
Anything is a blessing which makes us pray.[104]
We should pray when we are in a praying mood, for it would be sinful to neglect so fair an opportunity. We should pray when we are not in a proper mood, for it would be dangerous to remain in so unhealthy a condition.[105]
  • Modlitba hýbe rukou která hýbe světem.
Prayer moves the arm that moves the world.[106]
Remember, Christ's scholars must study upon their knees.[107]

We are quite persuaded that the very best way for you to be spending your leisure, is to be either reading or praying. You may get much instruction from books which afterwards you may use as a true weapon in your Lord and Master’s service. Paul cries, “Bring the books” — join in the cry.[108]
There should be as much difference between the worldling and the Christian, as between hell and heaven, between destruction and eternal life.[109]
  • Křesťan je neustálým zázrakem.
    A Christian is a perpetual miracle.[110]
I believe that the happiest of all Christians and the truest of Christians are those who never dare to doubt God, but take His Word simply as it stands, and believe it, and ask no questions, just feeling assured that if God has said it, it will be so.[111]
The Christian is the most contented man in the world, but he is the least contented with the world.[112]

In proportion as a church is holy, in that proportion will its testimony for Christ be powerful.[113]
  • Nevstoupíš-li do žádné církve, dokud nenajdeš nějakou dokonalou, musíš počkat, než se dostaneš do nebe; a mimo to, milý příteli, nalezneš-li dokonalou církev, nepřijmou tě; jsem si jist, že by pak už nebyla dokonalá.
If you do not join a church till you do find a perfect one, you must wait till you get to heaven; and, besides, my dear friend, if you ever find a perfect church they will not take you in; for I am sure they would not be perfect any longer.[114]
A church that does not exist to reclaim heathenism, to fight evil, to destroy error, to put down falsehood, a church that does not exist to take the side of the poor, to denounce injustice and to hold up righteousness, is a church that has no right to be.[115]
A church in the land without the Spirit of God is rather a curse than a blessing. If you have not the Spirit of God, Christian worker, remember you stand in somebody else's way; you are a tree bearing no fruit, standing where another fruitful tree might grow.[116]
  • Je-li v církvi, k níž příslušíš, něco, co je proti inspirovanému Slovu, opusť tu církev.
If there be anything in the church to which you belong which is contrary to the inspired Word, leave that church.[117]
  • Běda! Mnoho bylo nedávno učiněno, co podpořilo produkci trpasličích křesťanů. Bídní, neduživí věřící obrací církev spíše v nemocnici než v armádu.
Alas! Much has been done of late to promote the production of dwarfish Christians. Poor, sickly believers turn the church into an hospital, rather than an army.[118]
A nebude-li, jedna z prvních známek Jeho nepřítomnosti bude lenost v modlitbě.
The condition of the church may be very accurately gauged by its prayer meetings. So is the prayer meeting a grace-ometer, and from it we may judge of the amount of divine working among a people. If God be near a church, it must pray. And if He be not there, one of the first tokens of His absence will be slothfulness in prayer.[119]
  • Jestli ďábel nikdy neřve, církev nebude nikdy zpívat. Pán Bůh příliš nepracuje, když ďábel není bdělý a aktivní.
If the devil never roars, the Church will never sing! God is not doing much if the devil is not awake and busy. Depend upon it: a working Christ makes a raging devil! When you hear ill reports, cruel speeches, threats, taunts and the like, believe that the Lord is among His people and is working gloriously.[120]
  • Ta církev, kterou má svět nejradši, je dozajista ta, kterou si Bůh oškliví.
That very church which the world likes best is sure to be that which God abhors.[121]

O rodině[editovat]

Nebude-li nás nikdy bolet hlava z napomínání našich dětí, budou nás velmi bolet srdce, až vyrostou.
If we never have headaches through rebuking our children, we shall have plenty of heartaches when they grow up.[122]
I have no faith in that woman who talks of grace and glory abroad, and uses no soap and water at home. Let the buttons be on the shirts, let the children's socks be mended, let the roast mutton be done to a turn, let the house be as neat as a new pin, and the home be happy as home can be.[123]
According to the teaching of the apostle, „The husband is the head of the wife.“ Don't you try to be the head; but you be the neck, then you can turn the head whichever way you like.[124]
Any man who declares children to be born perfect never was a father. Your child without evil? You without eyes, you mean![125]
  • Začněte učit brzy, neboť děti začínají brzy hřešit.
Begin early to teach, for children begin early to sin.[126]
  • Svatý život otce je bohatým dědictvím synů.
A father's holy life is a rich legacy for his sons.[127]
  • Děti budou své otce napodobovat v jejich neřestech, zřídkakdy v jejich pokání.
Children will imitate their fathers in their vices, seldom in their repentance.[128]
  • Manželství pochází z ráje a vede do ráje.[zdroj?]

Ostatní[editovat]

  • Rozhodně čtěte puritány, stojí za víc než všechny moderní věci dohromady.
By all means read the Puritans, they are worth more than all the modern stuff put together.[129]
  • Zdá-li se vám, že chcete něco jiného [než šálu], pak si nechte narůst vous! [Je to] obyčej nanejvýš přirozený, biblický, mužný a prospěšný.
If you feel that you want something else, why, then grow your beards! A habit most natural, scriptural, manly, and beneficial.[130]
  • Vytrvalostí dosáhl hledmýžď [Noemovy] archy.
By perseverance the snail reached the ark.[131]
  • Ze dvou zel si nevyber ani jedno.
    Of two evils, choose neither.[132]
A gentleman said to me, one day, „Ah! Mr. Spurgeon, I don't agree with you about religion; I am an agnostic.“ „Yes!“ I replied, „that is a Greek word, and the exact equivalent is ignoramus; if you like to claim that title, you are quite welcome to.“[133]
There are difficulties in everything, except in eating pancakes.[134]
  • Pravda zůstane pravdou, byť se i do opánků obuje.[zdroj?]

(John Charles Ryle)
I have often thought that one great secret of the marvelous honor which God has put on a man who is not in our denomination (I allude to Mr. Charles Spurgeon) is, the extraordinary boldness and confidence with which he stands up in the pulpit to speak to people about their sins and their souls. It cannot be said he does it from fear of any, or to please any. He seems to give every class of hearers its portion—to the rich and the poor, the high and the low, the king and the peasant, the learned and the illiterate. He gives to every one the plain message, according to God’s Word. I believe that very boldness has much to do with the success which God is pleased to give to his ministry. Let us not be ashamed to learn a lesson from him in this respect. Let us go and do likewise.[135]
